General
information: Generating Momentum
for our World consists of an opening plenary followed
by participatory skills workshops lasting 5 to 6 hours. Participants
will learn skills in a media that can be used to educate audiences
about our theme topic: Make Poverty History.
At the end of the day, participants will wrap up by presenting
newly acquired skills in the evening showcase. (order

It is important that students attend the full
day and be available to participate in the showcase.
Twelve workshops are planned for this year’s conference.
Students can choose and participate in one. The workshops are facilitated
by leaders in our community known for their expertise in the workshop
topics.

| Paint us a picture: Creating
Mural Art

Participants will learn the
techniques for creating a large, abstract mural. Acrylic, collage
and airbrush will be used. All materials used in the workshop are
provided at no additional charge. This workshop is intended for those
at all skill levels.

Making Music:
Creating a music CD

Students will learn the
basic techniques of creating a musical piece in an actual recording
studio. Due to time restraints and the complexity of the workshop,
participants must have a background in music, ie writing lyrics,
singing, playing an instrument etc.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own instrument if possible.
Audio equipment will be provided.

Theatre

This workshop focuses on developing
a short theater piece based on the participants’ knowledge
and analysis of the issues related to poverty. No previous theatre
experience is necessary but participants must be available to participate
in the performance at the end of the day.

Say it like it
is: Spoken Word
Location: resource room

Participants will create performance
art related to the theme including performance poetry, spoken word,
rap and song. Previous experience is not required – just a
willingness to explore and express your thoughts related to poverty
in a non-judgmental setting.

Telling Your Story:
Creating a 'Zine (print)

From layout and soliciting
writers to editing and distribution, this workshop will provide students
with the skills to produce a magazine or ‘Zine.
Participants will create a ‘zine related to the poverty theme and
will distribute it throughout the showcase as well as at their schools.

are interested in. Participants are encouraged to use innovative

Taking Action with
Direct Action

Direct Action teaches students
to choose an issue, write a petition, obtain proper permits and work
with the legal system to develop peaceful demonstrations and other
forms of protest.
No lectures here – this is a hands-on workshop where participants
will experience every aspect of Direct Action planning and execution.

Learn how to become ‘media
darlings’ in a hands-on, fun workshop. Participants will learn
how our daily media diet affects our knowledge and perceptions of
poverty. Developing a message and a media campaign to deliver that
message will be the focus.
Skills such as giving an interview, designing advertising, writing media
releases and organizing media events will be practiced.

Students will learn the basics
in producing a PSA from scripting to editing. The resulting 60 second
clips will be presented in the evening showcase. All the necessary
technical equipment will be provided at Video Pool Inc. and students
will also be introduced to the editing, audio and video suites.

Show

Producing a radio show, including
effective research methods, script writing, station managing, editing
and speaking will be the focus of this workshop. The workshop includes
a live on-air component from 4:00 – 5:00pm on CKUW, the University
of Winnipeg Campus Community Radio Station.

through Contemporary Dance

In this workshop, students
will learn to use choreographed movement to create images and express
ideas and feelings using the body rather than words. Participants
will create a dance piece with the goal of exploring their personal
feelings about poverty.

This workshop is designed specifically for teachers and supervisors with
an interest in international development and social justice issues. It
will include facilitated discussions on the theme of poverty, will highlight
available classroom resources, and will provide an opportunity to network
with other teachers who share a passion for the issues.
